Both Patricia and Gerard are very much involved with traditional
Irish music and dance in South Kerry. They're both hugely
involved in organising the May Bank
Holiday Irish Set Dancing Workshop Weekend held in Portmagee
for the past 11 years running. This commitment comes from
growing up in an area where the set dance still thrives.
So it's natural that the bar hosts Irish dancing on Friday
and Sunday nights every week throughout the year.
We have a dedicated group of local set dancers who would
dance every night of the week if they could. The sets are
local but have also incorporated some of the more popular
polka sets from Clare, Galway and elsewhere.
These two nights are supplemented by an 'Irish Night'
every Tuesday night during July and August. A mixture
of all things Irish, the night showcases local musical and
dancing talent. Gerard is the Master of Ceremonies, being
a guitar player and singer of some note himself, and is
often joined by rising singing star Gary O' Sullivan who,
when he isn't pulling pints behind the bar, can sing an
Irish ballad like no-one else.
This is the night to come if you want to learn how to Irish
dance - we hold easy-to-follow workshops on how to set
dance or even dance a hornpipe, if you're so inclined.
Don't worry if you think you can't - we've found some of
the best set dancers we've ever seen come from places like
Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
if you want to know what exactly is meant by the term the
craic, then you'll have to show up Tuesday night.
