Portmagee - Kerry's Hidden Gem

Portmagee is a little bit special. It's often described as "a picturesque and sleepy little fishing village on the South Western most tip of the Iveragh peninsula, just off the Ring of Kerry". It's true enough, we suppose, but the description only touches on the more obvious charms of our seaside home. We think that, after this tour, you'll have a taste for why Portmagee is Kerry's best kept secret and why you'll simply have to come see for yourself.

Portmagee is a real working fishing community - it's home to South Kerry's largest fishing fleet.

Portmagee's Location

First of all you're going to need to know our location, nestled beside the Atlantic, 10 miles from the famous Ring of Kerry on the Iveragh Peninsula. You'll also need to know that we are accessible via a variety of different routes and transportation methods.

Activities and Facilities in Portmagee

Portmagee is the perfect base to experience the best that Kerry has to offer. Whether you want to fill your days with golf, fishing, sightseeing or just relaxing in a beautiful environment, it's all here. We've also put together a directory of contact details for local tourist amenities such as bicycle and car hire, and all accommodation in the area from bed and breakfast to self-catering.

Magee's Port - How Portmagee got its name

Then you'll need to know a little bit about the history of how we were named after a smuggler of old and have a proud tradition of welcoming those from far flung areas to our shores.

Skelligs Rocks - History, Mystery and Meditation

You'll also want to know all about Skelligs Rocks, the giant pyramids of limestone that, for centuries, housed hermit monks in beehive huts, thousands of nesting gannets in Europe's largest such sanctuary, and how to experience the enigma of the Skelligs for yourself.

Portmagee's Unique New Year Celebration

Hands down, this is the best place in Ireland to celebrate the millenium. Every New Year's Eve in Portmagee is a magical event. Find out why.

So, as you can see, once you scratch the surface of Portmagee, you begin to uncover a history and depth of character that's hard to find anywhere else. Of course, to really experience that, you're just going to have to find out for yourself.
