The community of Portmagee where celebrating this week after Lonely Planet named The Skellig Ring one of the best travel destinations for 2017.

2015 saw the release of Star Wars, The Force Awakens and Portmagee has been the ‘go to’ visitor destination for many this year. It is set to become even more popular in 2017, when the next episode of the Star Wars movies is released featuring Skellig Michael once again.

One of the most mysterious and enchanting of our local attractions is the Skellig Rocks. These floating pyramids of sandstone have been home to some of the earliest monastic settlements in Ireland as well as providing sanctuary to fantastic numbers of birdlife in the area. A visit is a must and boat trips to the rock are available every Summer from Mid-May to end of September. The nearby Skelligs Experience heritage centre in Valentia brings the sights and sounds of Skelligs to life. Skelligs is a magical place and it would be a crime to come to Kerry and not experience it.

The community are working together in the Skellig Coast Area to deliver new experiences and to bring the Monks Story to life from Skellig Michael.

We congratulate everyone in the local community who have worked so hard to make this dream a reality and be voted one of the top destinations in the world.

We are looking forward to welcoming more new visitors in 2017.
